Born on July 23, 1941, in Long Branch, New Jersey, Bill was a son of the late Vanderbilt and Dorothy Boyce. Raised in Atlantic Highlands, he made his home in Leonardo 54 years ago, where he became a cherished member of the community.
Bill's early years were marked by a strong sense of duty and service, which led him to serve in the US Army just prior to the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he embarked on a career as a heavy construction laborer with the Laborers Union 472. His work on roads and highways was not just a job but a testament to his dedication to the infrastructure that keeps communities like his own thriving.
Beyond his professional life, Bill was deeply involved in his community. He was a proud member of the Community Fire Company and the Middletown Fire Police, where he dedicated countless hours to ensuring the safety of his neighbors. His commitment to service continued through his work with the American Legion Post in Leonardo and his volunteer efforts with Middletown Helps its Own. Bill's kindness and willingness to lend a hand were hallmarks of his character.
Bill's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was an active member of the Middletown Camping Club, finding joy and camaraderie around the campfire. His love for working on cars was well-known, and he could often be found under the hood, fixing up an engine or offering advice on a tricky repair. Bill was the epitome of handy, and his skills and knowledge were always at the service of friends and family.
He is survived by his loving siblings: Dorothy Saunders, Shirley Munk, Sharon Copeland, and his brother Jimmy Boyce. Bill also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, as well as his godchildren, James Fligor and Larry Schachtel, who will miss his guidance and gentle spirit. He was predeceased by his brothers Donald, Van, Charles, and his sister Marilyn Oakley.
